Recently I discovered that Reddit has a community article called “Am I the Asshole?”. This article is where someone posts a situation that they were in and its outcome. Then people share their opinions by telling them if they were or were not an asshole regarding the situation. I asked the community in my last blog post to share any issues they have while working in the garden center industry. Unfortunately, I got no messages back BUT I did get into a situation at work where I had to get a bit stern with someone I work with which resulted in an outcome of my coworker and I not speaking with each other. I really feel like an asshole and it brought on self reflection when it comes to working in teams and the diverse personality traits that an individual has.
On Sunday, I instructed my coworker to restock the power tool equipment wall. The power equipment wall is pretty self explanatory – what is missing has an empty space and a tag. Restocking this wall is a pretty simple task. One way to restock the wall is by checking inventory on the computer through our Point of Sale System, which I do teach and reinforce while training. Another way to restock the wall is by writing down what is missing to bring your list upstairs to see what we need downstairs. Both ways that any individual can restock our power equipment wall.
Before Sunday, I asked this same coworker to restock the power tools which never got done. Then on Sunday, after asking my coworker to restock the power tool wall again after a busy Saturday – I was asked by him to TELL him what was missing. I responded in a calm voice, “you are capable of finding out what is missing and checking inventory without my assistance.” I was not mean nor did I yell. I feel as someone who trains every new employee -I give them all the tools that they need to accomplish tasks at work. I also feel that being with the company for longer than six months that these skills SHOULD be retained. I have enough to deal with at work such as running the nursery department, helping customers, being a “to go to individual” when problem arises, and anything that comes my way. Adding the ACCOUNTABILITY to keeping up with what was selling and that had to be put back on the shelf because someone that i work with was using the excuse “I don’t know how” (after being taught and shown multiple times) and refusing to be accountable was not going to fly with me that day.
Me being irritable caused my coworker to not converse with me since that moment on Sunday . As the ability to have simple coffee shop talk, the atmosphere has been tense when the both of us carry on our work day. I feel like the asshole.
Am I the asshole?
The beauty of working with the teams is that you have these personality traits. My coworker having a harmonious trait where they want everyone to get along and want no conflict – which is why I am being avoided because I brought conflict. Then there is me, someone who has a restorative personality traits where I guide people to increase functionality. Having this personality trait makes me feel as if I did not do my training right for this individual. We will eventually talk about these personality traits and where you can go to get this testing done so that you and your team can how to be the best team out there.
